In hepatocytes, silybin inhibits the development of free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and preventing liver inflammation and fibrosis. The anti-inflammatory properties of Silybin act at the level of the DNA/RNA nucleus. The key to the development of liver fibrosis is the transformation of hepatic stellate cells into myofibroblasts, which is limited by Silybin by interrupting cell signaling. Silybin reduces stellate cell DNA synthesis, spreading and formation of fibrous tissue. Silybin limits changes in biochemical and blood coagulation parameters and reduces the degree of hemorrhagic necrosis of the liver. It also inhibits the absorption of toxins on the mucosa of hepatocytes.
